An emphasis on worker safety at Great Falls Clinic led to the medical center receiving a big check Thursday.
Lanny Hubbard, president and CEO of the Montana State Fund, the state’s largest workers’ compensation insurance company, was on hand to present clinic administrators with an oversized check for $62,918.88.
MSF’s board of directors recently announced the agency is distributing a record-matching $35 million in dividends to policyholders by Dec. 9. It’s the second year in a row that the Montana State Fund has distributed $35 million in dividends.
While never guaranteed, dividends are a result of increased safety efforts by employers and better-than-expected operating records and investment performance.
“Workplace safety is the key to reducing workers’ compensation costs and ensuring safer workers,” Hubbard said Thursday. “Only safe employers can earn a dividend.”
He thanked Great Falls Clinic Chief Executive Officer Vicki Newmiller for the medical facility’s worker safety efforts.
She in turn praised human resources director Sally Callery for heading up the clinic’s increased efforts.
“We can achieve a safer workplace when each employee keeps job safety tips in mind every day,” Newmiller said.
Callery said the clinic has been focusing on a “return to work” program, which helps employees who are injured come back to work more quickly, including doing modified tasks until they’re fully up to speed.
Hubbard later praised “return to work” programs, noting that only about 50 percent of injured employees who are out at least six month ever return to work.
