Singapore started the Driverless car test a while back with much excitement. The self driving car was supposed to disrupt transport as mentioned by the Singapore authorities. On 18th October 2016 a self driving car or a driverless car hit a lorry. Singapore has its first driverless accident now. The self driving car collided with a lorry in Biopolis Drive at one north about 930am. 930am should have light traffic and biopolis already has light traffic through the day.
The self driving car accident is the first accident of its kind in Singapore. Of course question is how would the lorry claim insurance?
The driverless car belongs to nuTonomy. In august 2016 Singapore launched the test as the worlds first trial of self driving driverless taxis on public roads. Singapore loves to be first and now we are.
The self-driving car, which was on a test drive, had two engineers on board and one of them was behind the wheel as a safety driver, nuTonomy said. It added that it is still investigating if the safety driver took over control of the car at the time of the crash.
nuTonomy said that the driverless car was travelling at a "low speed" when the accident happened. What is low speed?
Public has raised questions about the safety of such cars and who should be liable in such a case.
The National Environment Agency and Ministry of Transport had issued a request for information for the design and development of vehicles that can autonomously clean pavements and roads, as well as collect and dispose of stored litter recently.
The news quoted Dr Park Byung Joon, an SIM University senior lecturer in urban transport management, said the accidents do not come as a surprise and said "Humans don't always behave the way they should on the roads. And technology is not advanced enough to pre-empt how humans would behave,"
Dr Park said that Singapore may be too optimistic in thinking autonomous vehicles will soon be a common sight on the roads. "It's at least a decade or two away." Seems like Singapore just wants to be on the map as being the first.
Now even with the accident which no one was injured, we are launching the first driverless bus!
Driverless buses will commute between Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and CleanTech Park, and possibly even to Pioneer MRT station.
The 12m-long buses could potentially ferry people between NTU and CleanTech Park in the Jurong Innovation District, to even Pioneer MRT station in the future. The driverless buses are said to carry 80 passengers. Think about 80 people on board, are we ready yet?
Professor Lam Khin Yong, NTU Chief of Staff and Vice-President of Research. said autonomous bus trial is the first of its kind in Singapore that will aim to improve road safety, reduce vehicle congestion, alleviate pollution and address manpower challenges. How will having a bus with a driver and one without a driver be different when it comes to congestion or pollution? Vehicles with or without drivers will still add to the number of vehicles on the road. The only difference is whether there will be driver or one without. Maybe LTA should fix the MRT and LRT issues first before jumping onto a new technology.
